Welcome to Class 10!
Welcome to Class 10! Mr Ford is our class teacher for this year and we are supported by the fantastic Mrs Briddock.
We are a class of 28 hard-working and wonderful children who have a love for learning. Our aim is to try our very best each day in everything that we do whilst being polite, caring and friendly members of the Thorpe Hesley family.
2022/23 holds very exciting times for our class and our school so take a look on our class page to see what we have been getting up to!
My door is always open to pop in and see me for any concerns or questions you have, I will be more than happy to help. I can be contacted via the main school office before or after the school day or through our year group email THPYear3@NCLT.ac.uk.
I am really looking forward to welcoming your children into Class 10 and I know we will have a fantastic year.
P.E. Days
Wednesday & Friday afternoons. Please make sure your child has a white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps/trainers with them for these days. For outdoor PE, your child will need black/grey joggers and jumper/hoodie, this should be at school at all times. Please note that PE kits should be brought in a draw-string bag.
Homework
Homework is set on a weekly basis. Your child will be set homework on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. Spellings are sent home weekly and should be practised throughout the week and transferred into writing. You will find your child’s spelling in their diary’s.
Reading
As a class, we are working together to achieve our Reading Reward, which means we must be making an effort to read at home as much as possible! It is important that you record when your child has read to you at home in their reading record to help your child earn their all-important reading tokens! Please ensure that you hear your child read at least 3 times a week as an absolute minimum – the more reading, the better our literacy, language and imaginative skills. Your child’s diary should be in school every day and will be checked every week.
A Year in the Life
Currently Studying:
Extreme Environments
For the Summer term, Class 10 are delving into an exciting topic all about ‘Extreme Environments’.
Throughout this topic, we will be learning about a variety of environments considered to be extreme for humans. We will be looking at how volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes can all contribute to an extreme environment and discover how countries at risk of these events engage in day-to-day life. We will also be learning about the historical aspects of extreme environments, deepening our understanding of historical figures who paved the way for us to learn about the different environments in a more complex way. This is sure to be a fantastic way to finish our year!
World Book Day
On Thursday 2nd March 2023, schools all around the country celebrated World Book Day. Class 10 got involved and wore some fantastic outfits inspired by our favourite books. It was fabulous to see the amount of effort that went into each and every idea, we had such a lovely day together. Well done Class 10.

We were treated to a special performance by students from the local sixth form who were then kind enough to teach us how to dance like true scarecrows… as always we tried our very best and we had lots of fun. Take a look at our amazing outfits!
English
Class 10 have been learning all about ‘warning tales’ for their writing. They have been working hard to identify the features of this genre and have been practising the new skills ready for their end piece. So far, they have learnt how to distinguish action, dialogue and description within their stories, practised using direct speech with exciting synonyms for ‘said’ and have started to use a variety of sentence openers to allow their story to flow seamlessly. I can not wait to read their pieces to be proud of’s!
Maths
Over the last few weeks, Mr Ford’s maths group have been working exceptionally hard to understand measurement and fractions. We started off learning how to accurately measure a variety of objects both in and outside of the classroom. We then furthered our skills to understand how to convert between different unit of measurements and finished off with understanding how to calculate the perimeter of different objects. We have now moved onto fractions and the class have been working their socks off… I wonder if they could tell you what they have learnt so far?
Reading
In Class 10, we believe that reading inspires imagination, nurtures creativity and opens us up to endless possibilities. We have a reading corner dedicated to our favourite books… including a few of Mr Ford’s! We are currently reading ‘The Creakers’ by Tom Fletcher as a class and we are thoroughly enjoying it. Take a look at some of the activities we get up to as we open up our books and enter a variety of different worlds!
On the final day of the first half-term, Class 10 were treated to a film with some snacks as a reward for achieving their reading token… I wonder what the reward will be next?
Art and DT
Class 10 have been working hard to produce portraits inspired by the Jamaican artist, Osmond Watson. Over the weeks, they learnt how to understand the proportions of the face and how to sketch the intricate details of different facial features. The class really enjoyed letting their artistic flare shine and they produced some fabulous pieces. Over the next few weeks, Class 10 will be planning, designing, creating and evaluating self-made bobsleighs which will be used for the ‘Great Thorpe Hesley Bobsleigh Race’… so far, we have looked at the features of a bobsleigh and have had a go at designing our own using a specific criteria and set of materials. Class 10 produced some wonderful annotated designs, I can not wait to see how they turn out. Bring on the race!
Reflection Time
Each week, Class 10 have the time to reflect on their lives. This could be discussing current world issues or topics closer to home, whatever it is, Class 10 are able to discuss, debate and share ideas in an environment where everybody has the opportunity to listen and to be heard. For the first half term, we will be focusing on who we are as individuals, appreciating and celebrating the differences within us all. Take a look at what we have been getting up to in our sessions, such as turning the mirror inward to our partners and telling them something that is special and unique about them.
