Class 15

Welcome to Class 15!

Class 15 is made up of 27 wonderful year 5 students. Our class teacher is Miss Clarke and we are lucky enough to have the support of lots of fantastic teaching assistants including Mrs Hobson, Mrs Bailey & Mrs Smelt.

During the Autumn term, our first topic will be a whole-school creativity focus on The Scarecrow’s Dance. This will then be followed by our Year 5 topic of ‘To Thorpe Hesley… and Beyond!’ which will focus on learning about our local area, as well as Space.

In the Spring term, our topic will be ‘Hear the Congo Rhythm’ – where we will be learning about the Democratic Republic of Congo.

P.E.

We will be having our PE days on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. However, please ensure that you bring your PE kit to school all week. This should be kept in a drawstring bag. You need a white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps or trainers. For outdoor PE, you might also want black or grey tracksuit bottoms and a jumper. Please make sure you have tape to cover pierced ears and a hair band to tie back long hair.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Friday, this will be a maths activity based on the current maths learning. This should be returned to school by the following Friday. This will include weekly spellings which will be tested the following Friday.

Reading

We are now going to be using the new planners to record both home reading, as well as reading with an adult in school. These should be taken to and from school every day. Remember that for every 3 times you read in a week, you will get a reading reward ticket and for reading 5 times or more, you will get 2 tickets! As a class, we are set a target (150!) for the number of reading tokens that we need to earn each half term, if we meet it, then the whole class get to enjoy a reward.

Class 15 Blog

Here are some of the things happening in Class 15.

Hear the Congo Rhythm!

As an introduction to our new Spring term topic – Hear the Congo Rhythm! – we had a visitor in school to teach us some African drumming and dancing. We loved taking part in these activities throughout the day. We also had a geography lesson, where we looked at where the Democratic Republic of Congo is located, as well as other countries that speak French around the world.

Mental Health ‘Wear Blue’ Day

Our whole school catchphrase for today was ‘wear blue, don’t feel blue’, so we all dressed in our best blue clothes. We spent the day reflecting on what makes us happy and what we hope to achieve in our futures. In the afternoon, we went to visit our reading buddies in Class 4.

Our Local Walk

On Tuesday 20th September, we had a walk around our local area of Thorpe Hesley, where we went to see Keppel’s Column. Along the way, we were working on our geographical skills as we focused on the environment and different land types and uses. When we arrived at Keppel’s Column, we had the opportunity to do an observational drawing as we sketched the local landmark.

The Scarecrow’s Dance

Our first exciting themed topic of the year was ‘The Scarecrow’s Dance’. We had a dress up day where we all came to school in our best scarecrow attire and were really lucky as some sixth form students came to teach us how to dance like scarecrows! Lots of our learning in school was based around the topic of scarecrows and autumn themed. We created some beautiful scarecrow poetry, inspired by the book, some lovely scarecrow inspired silhouette artwork, cross-stitched sunflowers and even scarecrow style hip-hop dancing and drama!

Student Council

In Class 15, we asked the children who would like to be our student council member. The children who liked the idea wrote a short paragraph to explain why they thought they should be chosen. We then anonymised each child’s name and read the paragraphs. The children then voted for which paragraph they thought would make the best student council member for our class.

Our new school councillor for Class 15 is…. Summer!
