Welcome to class 19; the best class in Rotherham and indeed the world!

P.E.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday  afternoons. Please make sure you have your PE kit in school with you (indoor and outdoor kit).

Homework

Homework is set weekly on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. This will alternate between English and maths (set once a fortnight by your child’s maths teacher). Spellings are sent home weekly.

Spelling

Every Friday spellings are collected, tested and a new set will be sent home.  You will find these in our school planners. It is very important that spellings are practised and transferred into writing.

Reading

In Class 19, we are all working hard to achieve our Reading Reward. To do this, we need to read at home as much as possible to get lots of Starbucks Reading tokens. To help your child earn their reading tokens, record this when you read with them at home. Please ensure that they read at least 3 times a week but remember…the more the better! Reading will be checked every Friday  but school planners should be in school every day.

What we’ve been learning

The Scarecrow’s Dance

To kick off the year, for our whole creative school topic, we have been busy producing some of amazing pieces of work that has been based on ‘The Scarecrows Dance by Jane Yolan’

The children have produced some incredible artwork, written some interesting non-chronological reports and written a recount retelling the poem in the perspective of a crow. Keep your eyes peeled for our displays around school. You will be blown away by the childrens hardwork and effort during this creative topic!

Lost Treasure of the Maya…

Our topic this term will be focusing on the famous Maya civilisation. Our key question for this term will be ‘How did the Maya civilisation influence society today?’.

Hero Twins – against the gods of death!

For this terms text, the children will be reading a graphic novel. From this the children will be creating their own graphic novel based on the text ‘The Hero Twins’. In addition to this the children will be comparing the text to various myths and legends.

How did WW2 impact modern day Britain?

This term we will be learning all about World War 2 and the impact that it has had on society today.  As part of our topic, the children will be learning about life during war time and imagining themselves as an evacuee, about rationing and why this was implemented and understanding all about the Blitz (to name just a few things!) We will also be looking at some more mature topics such as the Holocaust which will allow the children to work on their discussion and empathy skills.
There will be lots of cross-curricular work taking place, particularly linked to English and Mathematics.

When The Sky Falls

During this term, in English, we will be reading and studying ‘When the sky falls’ by Philip Earle…
As the Second World War escalates and bombs start to fall, Joseph is charged with protecting Adonis the gorilla in this nerve-shreddingly tense thriller based on a true story. Inspired by a true story. It’s 1940, and Joseph has been packed off to stay with Mrs F, a gruff woman with no great fondness for children.

This text links closely to our topic and will allow for lots of cross-curricular writing opportunities
