PE and Sport

Thorpe Hesley prides itself on the wide range of sports accessible to the students in both the Infant and Junior buildings. Sports and physical mental well-being are very important and provides pupils with a positive foundation for their academic work.

Children at Thorpe Hesley are given the opportunity to participate in inter school competitions and tournaments and always represent our school fantastically, showing great sportsmanship, manners and team work.

PE and sport at Thorpe Hesley exposes children to self discipline, practice and preparation, goal-setting, success and failure and resilience.

Pupils are also given the opportunity to take part in many different extra-curricular activities and clubs with school staff and external providers.

Overview by Stage

Key Stage 1

The National Curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities  are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Pupils should develop core movement, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co- ordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils should be taught to:

  • master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage 2

The National Curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Pupils should continue to implement and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils should be taught to:

  • use running, jumping, catching and throwing in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate, such as football, netball, rounders, cricket, hockey, basketball, badminton and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, for example through gymnastics and athletics
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best.

Swimming and water safety
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Dance Club 2022-23

Mrs Hewitt and Mrs Nazir have been running a dance club for KS2 children on a Tuesday lunchtime. Children develop different types of dance skills linked to Salsa dancing.

“I like dance club because I feel like I can explress myself and enjoy dancing with my friends.” Holly W.

Mrs Payne held a basketball club for Y4 over the Autumn term. They met every Thursday afternoon to develop skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting and took part in mini games to apply their skills and develop teamwork.

“”I love basketball becuase it’s very active and it’s really fun. I also like it because it keeps you fit and you can make lots of friends there. I LOVE BASKETBALL!” Daisy A.

“I like basketball club because there’s a lot of room and there’s not too many teams so you have more goes at playing. All of my friends play aswell so there’s always a chance that we will be on the same team.” Alfie W

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby

During the Autumn term, Mrs Payne ran a tag rugby club. The children played on the field and developed skills before playing mini tag games. For some children, it was their first time playing a tag rugby game and therefore we had to learn rules such as only being able to pass backwards and how to play the ball once a tackle was complete.

Y1/2 Football club

Mr Nicholas from Winterhill school came in to deliver a football after school club to our children in year 1 and 2. Children enjoyed learning new skills and then applied them to various game situations. Children particularly liked the ‘player on the session’ award at the end of each session. We are very lucky to have Mr Nicholas come and provide these experiences for our children.

Hockey club

A couple of Y6 student decided to set up a lunchtime hockey club on a Monday lunch time. They set up, organise and referee the games (with adult supervision) and it has proven very successful so far. Well done and thank you!
